Hunter College High School (HCHS) has a sizable and varied athletics program, fielding over 50 teams of Hunter Hawks. As part of this dynamic program, many different team sports are offered to middle school students. This information package seeks to give incoming students and current students an overview of the Middle School (MS) athletics program.

There is a MS Information Meeting at the beginning of each season explaining details of the sport teams, the try-out schedule (if any), the practice schedule, and any other relevant information. This meeting is usually held at 3:30pm in the Hunter gym on a date that is announced by PTA email, on the Hunter Athletics webpage, and the Sports Blast (see Hunter Sports Online below). Students may also check the sports bulletin boards downstairs in the Hunter basement. These meetings are typically held in the 2nd/3rd week of September, the first week of November, and the first week of March. Practices begin immediately after the information meeting, as early as the same day.
Hunter tries to accommodate as many students as possible. Some teams have tryouts and, due to limited court, ball field, and coaching availability, may not be able to accept all who wish to play. The situation may shift from year-to-year depending on the numbers.
Information about Hunter Sports may be found at www.hunterschools.org/page/high-school/athletics. There are tabs for Athletics Team News (with recent results and athlete highlights), the current game schedule, directions to regular venues, and links to all relevant documents and forms. In addition to this central online resource, your child’s calendar, accessible upon login to MyHunter, will include practices and games of any current sport he/she is participating in. You may also subscribe to a weekly “Sports Blast” email put out by the Hunter Student Athletic Association and the Athletic Department. This Sports Blast features the Video of the Week, games/matchups of the week, interest articles, student features, and game/team photos. Before each season, the Sports Blast will also list all information sessions and tryout dates.
To support the cost of the athletics program, a fee of $150 is collected by the coaches from each participating athlete at the beginning of each season for each sport to pay for all aspects of the program, including uniforms, league fees, some coaching costs, facilities, transportation and other expenses. An HCHS student fee waiver is accepted for the Athletic Uniform and Equipment fee. Uniforms must be returned at the completion of each season. Some sports require participants to provide their own additional equipment.
Most sports have 2-3 team captains who communicate with other students, assist the coaches in running practices, and serve as leaders and role models for the team.
Parents are encouraged to attend their team’s competitions and support the team. The HCHS PTA Sports Committee arranges for each team to have a parent representative who is a resource to team parents about team information and game/practice schedules and locations, and also facilitates communication between the coaches and team parents. The committee believes a network of parent representatives for Hunter’s athletic teams will strengthen the sense of community among the student athletes, coaches, and parents and therefore, enrich the students’ athletic experience. Parents with questions about a sport can contact the sport rep for that team.
Each athlete must submit an Interscholastic Sports Examination form and a PSAL consent form. These forms are collected by the coach at the beginning of the season. The medical form MUST BE DATED, STAMPED and SIGNED BY A DOCTOR, OR IT WILL NOT BE VALID. The medical form is valid for one calendar year from the date of the medical exam. A parental form must be turned in for each sport. It is HIGHLY recommended to all parents that the medical form be completed each summer and turned in at the beginning of the school year to the Athletic Department. Summer camp forms are not accepted; it must be the forms available online on the Hunter Athletics webpage.
